Full house to learn about ai and how it will affect our future
|Posted on 27 September, 2018
Our third GetTogether event this year on September 25th dealt with Artificial Intelligence and its consequences in our everyday lives. Evidently, many people were eager to know the answer to the question for the evening – “AI: Artificial hype or intelligence of the future?” – as we were able to welcome a well-filled room of enthusiastic and attentive listeners.
As our speaker for the night we welcomed Patrick De Mazière, who has a PhD in Medical Sciences, more specifically in the domain of computational neurosciences, and is now the head of the Research & Expertise Centre Digital Solutions of UC Leuven-Limburg and leads a team of 30 researchers with focus on Big Data/IoT, ICT, Care & Technology, eLearning and User-centred Design (BDD).
Patrick talked to our group of Queaso Systems collaborators and guests about the terminology used in the world of AI and its use in medical, social and economic fields. He explained that it’s been around for much longer than most people think, and showed us some real life examples of both the benefits and the possible dangers of the employment of Artificial Intelligence in our daily lives.
A room full of attentive people for this fascinating subject.
The risks of AI
Our speaker made sure to talk about some negative aspects of AI as well. He showed us that it is important to know the risks of what we are dealing with. It can also be hard to find the right balance between AI and ethics. We need to make sure to keep being careful with how we employ AI in our professional and personal lives.
Artificial hype or the intelligence of the future?
By the end of his interesting keynote, we were able to formulate a better answer to the question Patrick posed at the beginning. We can see that Artificial Intelligence is clearly not a temporary hype and that it is here to stay. So is AI a definite part of our future? Yes, there is no denying that. But it is important to always keep in mind that we need to be careful and ethical in how we make use of it.
After an interesting GetTogether lecture and an informative question round, we ended the night with a drink at the bar and a cozy aftertalk with the participants. Thank you Patrick for the interesting evening!
